Donal Hord: Transcending The Solid
DONAL HORD: TRANSCENDING THE SOLID, published in association with the San Diego Historical Society, is a beautifully illustrated full-color book that encompasses the largest collection ever assembled of one of America's eminent sculptors. Over a period of nearly forty years Donal Hord pursued his lifelong career in San Diego while rising to levels of international acclaim including recognition as a full academician of the National Academy of Design, as well as winning two American Academy of he Arts and Letters Awards, a Fellowship in the National Sculpture Society, and an American Institute of Architects Gold Medal. In eulogizing the artist in 1966, Frederick Whitaker, editor of The American Artist Magazine and academician of the National Academy of Design, said he considered Mr. Hord this country's greatest sculptor.Mr. Hord has been cited as the first sculptor since the ancient Egyptians to have carved obsidian. Written by the staff of the San Diego Historical Society under the direction of curator Jennifer Luksic, this publiction is based largely on the writings and research of the late Bruce Kamerling; the Society's former Curator of Collections and close friend of Mr.Hord during the last years of the artist’s life. |
